Kabukicho Nights

Kabukicho is one of Tokyo's oldest "red light" districts. During the day, it is relatively quiet, but at night Kabukicho shows its real personality and is filled with night club workers, entertainment seekers, those down on their luck, and people on the fringes of Japanese society. Kabukicho Nights is a series of 40 photographs taken from 2012 - 2013 at night in Kabukicho. These photographs were originally taken on film, and the prints exhibited in Tokyo in 2013; a portion of the series was later shown in Shanghai, but they have never been exhibited as a whole outside of Asia. The photographer has lived in Tokyo for more than 20 years; he works predominately in B&W film, printed through the darkroom process. Notable exhibitions include "Facing Shibuya" (2011, Ginza Nikon Salon), "Kabukicho Nights" (2013, M2 Gallery), Yokohama Bench (2015, Red Photo Gallery), Ohh! Shibuya (2017, Red Photo Gallery) and Asakusa Unmasked (2021, Red Photo Gallery).
