Select Works by Joseph Lofton

Music and rhythm have been a constant part of Lofton’s work, influenced by his love of jazz. His subject matter also includes urban and city environments, jazz music, allegories, still-lifes, botanicals and historical references. His illustrative use of restrained elements of design, narration and color is sometimes misleading. The artist’s knowledge of placement, color, storytelling, abstract forms and design is unsurpassed in his use of details. Holding these elements together are a playful nod and tongue-in-cheek wink to the observer while Lofton emphasizes his social, religious and political views.

"My approach is contemporary and consists of a variety of subjects. My medium is acrylic collage. My execution is flat and frontal and falls somewhere in the middle ground between objective and non-objective concerns.

It is not my mission to emulate realistic images, but rather to use objects as a point of reference in creating a composition of forceful forms and colors." J. Lofton
