Future Reliks is a contemporary African art project exploring identity, culture, tradition and spirituality through reimagined masks.
The project draws inspiration from a large database of documented African masks spanning over thousands of years, particularly ones associated with West and Central African cultures and transforming them through modern technology. Each mask is a new artwork rather than a replica of a historical or sacred object. Traditional visual languages are treated as sources of research and inspiration, while the resulting forms are a blend of the past present and future.

Masks have had a deep rooted cultural significance in African cultures for thousands of years. They are symbols of identity, ancestry, spirituality, social organisation, education, performance, initiation, mourning and community memory. In addition to all this, they are a show of exquisite, intricate craftsmanship and beauty.
During the colonisation of Africa, masks experienced a great erasure both physically and metaphorically. Their meanings and place were overridden and replaced with "modern" religion. What once represented the core of communities became the complete antithesis of that. While some upheld their value, others dismissed them as "outdated" and even "demonic".
Future Reliks aims to cement their beauty and significance in modern society by reimagining them in unique ways. It draws inspiration from works from African tribes such as the Baule, Dogon, Bamana, Senufo, Mende, Yoruba, Kuba, Mossi, Grassfields, Edo and much more while paying homage to this beautiful craft.
