José de Sousa Saramago (November 16, 1922 - June 18, 2010) was a Portuguese writer and winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize for Literature.

More than two million copies of Saramag's books have been sold in his home country while his works have been translated into 25 languages. [1] [2] As an advocate of libertarian communism, Saramago was criticized by institutions such as the Catholic Church , the European Union, and the International Monetary Fund, and as an atheist , he defended love as an instrument for improving the human condition.
