021.Tojinbo/Fukui

A scenic spot located 3 kilometers north of Mikuni Port (Sakai City) at the northern tip of Fukui Prefecture. Legend has it that the name "Tojinbo" comes from the name of an evil monk from Hiraizumi Temple (Katsuyama City). Tojinbo, a national scenic beauty known for the view of the rough waves of the Sea of Japan crashing against the cliffs, has a bold rock wall stretching for about one kilometer. It is said that there are only three places in the world where such extensive columnar joints of pyroxene andesite are found, making it a very valuable geological site.

福井県の北端、三国(みくに)港（坂井市）の北方3キロメートルにある景勝地。東尋坊という地名は平泉(へいせん)寺（勝山市）の悪僧の名に由来するという伝説があります。 断崖に日本海の荒波が打ち寄せる景色で知られる国指定名勝東尋坊は約1キロメートルにわたり豪快な岩壁が広がっています。このような輝石安山岩の柱状節理が広範囲にあるのは、世界に3ヵ所ともいわれ、地質学的にも大変貴重な場所です。
