Ninjas emerged in an indefinite period of the 15th century, during the Sengoku era (1467-1615), a very turbulent phase in Japanese history, in which daimyos disputed control of Japan, while the emperor and the court were morally and politically weakened.

Mentions of kunoichi are rather vague such women would essentially act as spies, as there is doubt as to whether they received proper training. But if they were instructed, they could learn how to commit acts of sabotage and even murder, mainly killing with the use of poison, a technique associated with ninjas and women, as it is seen as a cowardly way of killing someone. They could also use knives, needles, katanas and other forms of execution.
