'Rise' is the official name given to the public art sculpture located at Broadway roundabout in Belfast, in the North of Ireland. Locals have given this sculpture unofficial, colloquial titles such as the 'Balls on the Falls' & 'The Westicles', due to where it is located, close to the Falls Road in West Belfast and also in reference to its shape made from two, spherical, metal structures.
The 'Rise' sculpture sits above the Westlink underpass to N. Ireland's M1 motorway and it is said that approximately 80,000 cars pass under it on average each day. It was on my way home from work one evening, whilst driving towards the sculpture, I thought that it would make a nice light trail image.
When I arrived at the location to take the image, I set up in a position where I was able to see the traffic coming from both directions. I decided to wait until there was a large lorry or bus coming towards me, so that I could capture light trails at a higher trajectory. When I saw this on the back of the camera, I knew I had a nice image.
This image has given me great success, as it was commended & published in the UK Landscape Photographer of the Year 2022 - Collection 15 book, as well as being made a starred image by the Northern Ireland Photographic Association. This image was also digitally projected on to the side of a building in Brussels, which was pretty cool.
