The Road to Aoraki Mount Cook, New Zealand
The road to Aoraki Mount Cook is one of the best roads you can drive in the whole of New Zealand. This stretch of State Highway leads you straight to Aoraki Mount Cook, New Zealand's tallest mountain. The road hugs Lake Pukaki most of the way and the Southern Alps can be seen for miles.
On this particular day I decided I wanted to take a photo that was slightly different to the others you see from this location, so I climbed a bank to get to some elevation and point my lens above the road.
The result was this shot with a sky full of lenticular clouds, a reflecting Lake Pukaki, Aoraki Mount Cook standing proud centre stage, and the road from an elevated angle making this image different to the rest.
It's my favourite shot from this location and the scratches from prickle bushes was worth it!
The Mountains are Calling is the second collection by New Zealand photographer Rach Stewart of 20 single edition images after her first sold out collection Aotearoa Dreaming.
'I have been chasing Aotearoa New Zealand's mountains with my camera for the majority of my career with my signature style long exposure and atmospheric light photography.
Our natural world has such a pull on us as human beings, and many of us identify our souls with certain parts of its creation. To me the mountains are where I feel the most humbled by nature. Mountains lift me, but they scare me. They make me realise as humans we are just mere mortals strolling this earth for a short moment in time.
These images are some of my favourites from all the sunrises, sunsets, hikes and flights I have experienced with the mountains over the past 7 years. I hope you enjoy them too.'
