From slave to queen, Tereza de Benguela lived in the 17th century and was the leader of the largest quilombo in Mato Grosso. Under her leadership, the black and indigenous community resisted slavery for two decades.

In honor of Tereza de Benguela, the 25th of July is officially the National Day of Tereza de Benguela and the Black Woman in Brazil.

Tereza de Benguela will represent the Marielle Institute, which also defends racial equality and social rights for all classes.
