What is poetry but a place to land and feed our soul like the bees and butterflies flocking to this thistle? Poems can be frightening, and even appear superficially unwelcoming–much like these barb-like spikes. It can be terrifying to allow ourselves to be vulnerable enough to write the very poems that most need to be written.

Poetry helps us to marvel at the beauty of the words in much the same way that we marvel at nature. Poetry also can be whimsical, and is perhaps the best art form at simultaneously being soothing and pushing our boundaries. I see all of those aspects of poetry within my picture of this purple thistle.

From different vantage points, a thistle is a flower, an edible plant, and even a weed. Its fate is to be put in a vase, pulled up from the root and discarded, or left alone to swirl in nature–it all depends on the person that encounters the thistle, or the poem.
