Flavius Claudius Julianus (331 - 363 AD) was Roman emperor from 361 - 363, nephew of Constantine the Great and a scholar and military leader who was proclaimed emperor by his troops after the death of his rival Constantius II. The last non-Christian ruler of the Roman Empire, he was a fierce opponent of Christianity and publicly announced his conversion to paganism, thus earning the epithet "the Apostate". He purged top-heavy bureaucracy and attempted to revive traditional values of Neoplatonic Hellenism to save the empire from from dissolution. In 363, Julian embarked on a campaign against the Sasanian Empire, and although initially successful, he was mortally wounded under mysterious circumstances at the Battle of Samarra.
