The photo was selected as an Astronomical picture Of the Day (APOD) by NASA, November 2, 2018.

J-P had planned to shoot this very difficult target for many years. In the Autumn 2018, he had a possibility to finalise his imaging project with the not-so-well-known supernova remnant W63 in Western part of the constellation Cygnus.

Spanning over four full moons on the sky, the beautiful image is a telescopic mosaic in twelve panels that combines 100 hours of exposure time using narrow band filters, shot with a Celestron Edge 1100 (with a 0.7 focal reducer), Apogee Alta U16 and AstroDon narrowband filters (5nm H-alpha 3nm S-II and 3nm O-III). Individual panels were shot between 2015 and 2018.

Likely over 5,000 light-years away, the visible part of the still expanding shell supernova remnant is around 150 light-years in diameter. So far no source has been identified as with the remains of W63's original star. Light from the star's supernova explosion would have reached Earth over 15,000 years ago.

This is the first image in the world showing the whole remnant clearly in full colors. Its wraithlike appearance is traced against the region's rich complex of interstellar clouds and dust by an eerie blue glow.

The Unlockable Content includes a special series museum quality acrylic/aluminum print 60 x 76 cm signed by J-P Metsävainio.

Stellar Collection by J-P collection image

Stellar Collection features 12 unique deep space photographs by J-P Metsävainio, a professional visual artist with a committed passion to reveal the hidden beauty of our universe. J-P is internationally known as a celebrity astrophotographer and author of a 12-year project to capture the deepest-ever panoramic view of the Milky Way.

J-P also recently co-authored the book 'Cosmic Clouds in 3D' with Brian May of Queen. As he puts it, "Revealing the hidden beauty of our universe is my passion. I stand in rapt adoration before all that I see. When art meets science, the results can be quite mind-blowing."

J-P's Stellar Collection features NFTs that have been selected and awarded by NASA, National Geographic and even the Vatican Observatory – and some previously unseen works!

Each NFT consists of the original astrophotograph and a gallery-quality acrylic/aluminum print personally signed by the artist available as Unlockable Content.
