Months had gone by with not much happening. From November/20 to May/21, Germany entered a lockdown due to Covid-19’s third wave. Contact restrictions in place, and a curfew at some point, made Berlin feels and look very empty for half a year. The transition to Spring was promising, as the weather would at least be more welcoming and, for many, not so depressing.

Personally, I found myself missing the snow and the darkness - the latter for the very first time in my life. I felt that I wanted to keep exploring more and more of that atmosphere and even push for an abstract use of scenes and the colours of the night in my photography. But now, bright and longer days, with only a few hours of night time, meant the exact opposite. And that’s not a bad thing.

For many years, looking for geometrical shapes and straight lines created by the sun hitting our urban structures was one of my favourite photographic approaches. The hard transition between light and darkness, how these shapes change according to the time of the day (and the season of the year) and how we move between them, from one to the other, just like in life itself, are a few of the reasons why. I love capturing that second in between. And, as usual, there’s always someone in the frame. The human connection that ties it all, even when not fully visible. But in most of my work, that means only one person (sorry, I don’t like the word ‘subject’).

In this particular day, now captured in “Berlin III”, I wanted at least two people in the scene, simply because June/2021 had arrived and the possibility of things going back to normal was closer than ever to be real. The normality of us being together, hold hands, hug and kiss each other, or sit together, close to one another, to enjoy life moments, the best moments, especially the most simple ones. A new chance to be fully present again and not think of how it was before or wonder what the future will be. I missed this feeling.
