"I explored masculinity and femininity in a female relationship in rural Eastern Cape, South Africa, where culture and masculinity dictates daily life. Women are not allowed to have tatoos in these communities. One of the women I portray has several of them. Same-sex relations are a taboo in this region. I love the power of these two subjects, as these two women defy the norm every day." - Charmain Carrol

Laura Charmain Carol is an award-winning activist and photographer from South Africa. She is a photographer, videographer, mother, a visionary and the founder of BNM Art Center. She worked at Women’s Media Watch, an organization that dealt with washing off racism, classism and inequality in the media. In 2011 she started working with Inkanyiso Media, an organization that deals with LGBTIQ issues, as project manager, writer and photographer. She then worked at Global Girls Media, an organization that gives young marginalized young women media skills in different townships in Johannesburg and in the outskirts of the Free State. She was appointed as project manager and trainer, where she produced a documentary titled Akhona’s story.

This piece is part of the "Female Filmmakers - Female Gaze - Collective Collection" brought to life by film director and feminist Josephine Landertinger Forero. Josephine invited female artists from around the world to create a piece that shows their interpretation of what "female gaze" means to them or honor women working in the film industry. The female artists were free to choose which option to pick.

As a feminist film director, I have been exploring the concept of female gaze for several years. I strongly believe in the power of film to change narratives in the real world. This is why I'm convinced we need more women in the film industry. Often, women are not given enough opportunities. So I invited several female artists from around the world to create a piece of art, so we can produce a film that has 100% female cast and crew attached.

Their pieces pay tribute to women working in the film industry or present their interpretation of what female gaze means to them.

All pieces are priced differently, according to the type of NFT (video, illustration, photography, etc.) and the artist’s track record. 50% of the sale goes to the female artist, the rest will be allocated to the production fund for the short film.

In this way, women are helping to create a new piece of art - a film.

By purchasing one of these NFTs, you are proactively being part of the change. Congratulations!
