Cycling in the late nineteenth century was very popular with men and women. Most women's pastimes prior to that had been in the home, so this was a new-found freedom. It was liberating to be able to cycle where and when they chose although, in practice, they did so mainly in mixed-gender cycling clubs, which provided an opportunity to make friends and meet potential partners as well. The original photograph from our archive, on which this photo-art is based, was taken in the 1890s. We hope you enjoy our interpretation of this delightful scene.
