Story
"Lenin's Square" is how I have always remembered this place. Yes, it's now called the Liberty Square, but for decades there was a huge iron statue of a man who had broken millions of lives, and it would not be so easily erased from my memory. Officially it is the main square of the city, but for me it has always been uncomfortable and too empty. In 2020 the place was completely rebuilt and decorated with fountains and lanterns in the shape of doves, the symbols of peace and freedom, and I never got to see it in person. There was a construction fence here when I went to my grandmother's funeral in summer of 2020, but today this area is ruined an has an ugly tricolor rag of an enemy's state hanging out. We'd better get rid of it soon...
The first picture from Reuters was shot here in 2022: https://www.reuters.com/news/picture/battle-for-mariupol-on-the-frontlines-of-idUSRTS73EXX
I'm doing everything I can to help bring Ukraine's victory in this brutal war closer, and I'm really looking forward to the day when I can get here with my camera again. The second picture will be tragic, but the third, after a while, will be a symbol of the rebirth of life in the peaceful European city of Mariupol. That's what I'm working on.
