Meridian is a Base-native crypto project focused on building payment rails for autonomous software agents, especially AI agents that need to pay each other seamlessly. The core idea is to make onchain payments as programmable and composable as APIs, enabling agents to transact without human intervention. Meridian positions itself as infrastructure rather than an app, aiming to sit quietly underneath agent economies.
At its heart, Meridian introduces a standardized payment layer (often referenced alongside the x402 concept) that lets agents send, receive, and account for payments onchain. Smart contracts act as intermediaries, tracking balances and routing funds while abstracting complexity away from the agent itself. This allows developers to embed payments directly into agent workflows instead of bolting them on later.

As AI agents become more autonomous, they’ll need economic autonomy too—paying for data, services, and other agents. Meridian’s vision is to support that future by aligning incentives through its token and protocol design, encouraging usage, governance, and long-term network participation. Whether it becomes core infrastructure or an experiment, it’s clearly built for an “agent-first” world.
