Inspired by the fabric swatch books of Marie Antoinette, Fabric explores the archival practice in the medium of the web and blockchain technology. Wardrobe books such as Antionette’s Gazette d'Atours allowed for the selection of costume past, present, and future, with swatch pinned to page. Centuries later, fragments of these fabrics offer a glimpse into the past - the original intent and costume, lost.
In my own work, Fabric, I examine art, technology, and preservation through the creation of a digital fabric swatch book. I have created fabric samples from my own catalogue of original work, reducing each piece to its core elements -color, texture, and form. This project explores the complexities of provenance, intent, and the role of preservation with the internet and blockchain technology.
Will the meaning behind the work endure, or will future generations encounter only digital remnants?
