Fire Next Time collection image

The Fire Next Time Collection creatively documents African American interactions with fire. Fire is an emotional, elemental and universal force that runs the gamut of expression and purpose. Fire enlightens and consumes, purifies and destroys, always leaving its mark on whatever it touches. Children of the African Diaspora are familiar with the transformative force of fire.

The collection is an interpretation of a tapestry work of the same title by renowned, multi-disciplinary artist Martin Grizzell. As a textile artist, Grizzell's works have been featured in Time Magazine and exhibited in galleries and sacred spaces throughout the U.S. and France. Two of his works are in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, and he is a featured designer in the book, Blacks in the History of Fashion (2022).
