How We Got Over collection image

The How We Got Over Collection explores the creolization of African ritual in North America. Often practiced openly and in plain view, our rituals are earthy, colourful and full of emotion. The essential qualifier lies in the relief, release and comfort that our folkways afford. They lift us to hope. They carry us from day to day, through plague and famine. They bathe our reality in fantasmic color.

The collection is an interpretation of the a collection of tapestry works of the same title by renowned, multi-disciplinary artist Martin Grizzell. As a textile artist, Grizzell's works have been featured in Time Magazine and exhibited in galleries and sacred spaces throughout the U.S. and France. Two of his works are in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, and he is a featured designer in the book, Blacks in the History of Fashion (2022).
