This was the only painting in Algoma that we had a pretty good idea of where it was. Dropped off by train at Mile 92 and camped on south side of Montreal River above the falls so we could paddle back and forth across the river and above the dam and look for MacDonald’s ,The Solemn Land, Montreal Falls and Wild River. Since that time we have found other versions of The Solemn Land by MacDonald as well as versions painted by Frank Johnston and A.Y. Jackson. Four Way Lodge is a 10 minute walk from this location.
