Gabriel Bianchini. In Cuba, the sparrow is much more than a bird, it represents a feeling, longing, experienced by all people who emigrate. That year 2002, standing on the wall of the Malecon, I said goodbye to my land, guided by a dream that was my sun and my light, but at the same time my mirror, which showed me everything I left behind. That day I became a sparrow, a feeling that would never leave me again.
Raul Munoz. Migration in Cuba has divided families, torn them apart for many decades. “Illusion Avenue” represents the exact moment at which Cubans, both here and overseas, will be able to meet again without any fear of political restrictions. This Malecón seawall will witness the end of sadness and grief suffered by thousands of Cubans. As they move on, they will be accompanied by sparrows which symbolize their longing and desire to return to their homeland.
Slices of TIME is a two-part collection, inspired by TIME’s nearly 100 year history. The collection features four editions: single red border, single white border, double red border, and double white border. The rarity of this collection was determined completely by Slices of TIME collectors and was final and set as of 12pm ET Feb 23, 2022.
The collection includes work by TIME Creative Director DW Pine and 38 incredible artists. TIME selected 19 artists, who in turn picked 19 collaborators, to create two pieces of art—one inspired by a year from TIME’s past and one by what they see as a hundred years in the future. So, for example, 1969 and 2069.
