ARTIST
„Against the Ropes“ is a collection of 25 1/1 photographs taken in Kampala, Uganda, documenting local boxers at the East Coast Boxing gym, a small gym which acts as a second home to athletes of all ages. In the beginning, I knew neither what to expect nor that I would end up spending days in this small gym. I loved everything about this place, the light, the patina, the people, the spirit, even the smell. I loved the sense of community and mutual respect between young and old. It’s a school at which one can learn not only boxing but also lessons for life. East Coast Boxing serves as a gathering point aimed at fostering positive social growth within the community. I have really enjoyed the time I spent with the folks at EastCoastBoxing and therefore I feel happy to tell you, that a big part of the generated funds of this project will go directly to the EastCoastBoxing gym, to support them with new boxing equipment. And if this here goes well, maybe with a new outside boxing ring.
