The Milky Way hangs like an ornament stretching above a small town unknowingly to the people below. In the distance a much larger city illuminates the scene glowing above the horizon.

I made it to the top of the lookout watching house lights flicker, cars driving the streets and late night walkers walk the beach with their flashlight. There was a lot of activity below while I had my eyes set on the stars above.

It was still early for this composition to align as I arrived a few hours earlier when the Milky Way was positioned much higher in the sky. While waiting, with a longer lens I zoomed into the sea cliff bridge below shooting cars travelling the scenic roadway with the stars. It made a nice time-lapse and entertained me while I waited.

Once the stars had aligned with the town subject below, I photographed the sequence of 64 photographs. This produced a high quality image to be able to clearly see houses, car, street lights, and the amazing dust lanes and nebulae of the Milky Way galactic centre.

A Cluster of Stars collection image

A 16 piece collection by multi-award winning Milky Way Landscape Photographer David Magro.

A Cluster of Stars is a small collection of 8 years photographing the Milky Way over diverse Australian landscapes. Each photograph requires precise planning to align the foreground with the distant Milky Way 26,000 light years away. This alignment occurs on select nights of the year when no moon is visible in the sky and when Earth faces the centre of our galaxy after dark. Most photographs have taken years for elements to align with good viewing conditions.

Each night you are under the stars it provides you with a surreal experience watching the night sky once your eyes adjust. Meteors light up across the sky, stars rhythmic twinkle, constellations rise and fall and you get a sense of calm looking out into its vastness. Time passes by quickly.

I present 16 minted 1/1 photographs and time-lapses showcasing the Milky Way.
