The Cusco region is among the most visited locations in Latin America. The main tourist attraction is the historical site of Machu Picchu, a 15th-century Inca citadel located on a 2,430-meter mountain ridge close to the village Aguas Calientes.

The Inca society used water for their sophisticated farming system, known as the vertical archipelago model of agriculture. In 1955, people in the Machu Picchu region took advantage of the mountainous terrain and built a hydro power plant. "Hidroelectrica" has a total installed capacity of 190 MW and generates clean energy for the regions of Cusco, Puno, and Apurímac.
