The final playoff game in Magnus Carlsen’s successful 2016 defense of his World Chess Championship against challenger Sergei Karjakin culminated with a shocking queen sacrifice that has been called the most dramatic final move of any World Chess Championship match. Like the other entries in this collection, the typeface and page backgrounds were selected to bridge chess culture with the wider world, by evoking a highly public and consequential non-chess event that occurred in the same country around the same time. Although neither contestant was American, the 2016 battle in New York City was the first world chess title match held in America since 1995, and only the third since 1907.
