Rolo Fernández (Havana, 1987) is interested in telling stories. He is interested in the characters and their "staging." He is interested in conflicts and leaves the viewer the possibility (and the responsibility) to resolve them. The style is, in any case, secondary. The style has to be put according to an expressive need. And yet it is perfectly possible to see clear copyright marks. The artist opts for a determined figuration, which never obscures the metaphor. There is a delight in a sarcastic and incisive humor, and in a conceptual essentiality that relates the production of Rolo Fernández with the great Cuban graphic tradition, and with the often despised art of illustration. But the message (because there is always "a message") has universal resonances. Rolo Fernández wants to record his dreams and his inventions. He wants to share them, with the certainty that others dreamed or invented similar worlds.
