Click to hear the tone.

Planetary tones are tones whose frequency is calculated on the basis of the rotation or orbit times of planets in the solar system in an octave-analog manner (sonification).

Every planet has a certain frequency far below 1 Hz due to its orbit duration and self-rotation duration. If you multiply this frequency, you can get into an audible (20 Hz ... 20 kHz) range.

In order to set the pitch in Hertz, the - average - duration of one revolution of the planet is first determined in an arbitrarily selected time unit, for example in seconds.

These patterns were created using a full-featured and mathematically accurate Tonoscope emulator, allowing me to create Chladni frequency patterns.

  • Mercury is the planet next to the sun.
  • Its rotation around the sun lasts about 88 days.
  • Its tone oscillates in the 30th octave with 141.27 Hz.
  • 141.27 Hz - 1 Fq (Mercury - Black & White).

According to Wikipedia, "Cymatics (from Ancient Greek: κῦμα, romanized: kyma, lit. 'wave') is a subset of modal vibrational phenomena. The term was coined by Hans Jenny (1904-1972), a Swiss follower of the philosophical school known as anthroposophy. Typically the surface of a plate, diaphragm, or membrane is vibrated, and regions of maximum and minimum displacement are made visible in a thin coating of particles, paste, or liquid. Different patterns emerge in the excitatory medium depending on the geometry of the plate and the driving frequency.

The apparatus employed can be simple, such as the Chinese spouting bowl, in which copper handles are rubbed and cause the copper bottom elements to vibrate. Other examples include the Chladni Plate and the so-called cymascope."

This collection is dedicated to various tools to visualize the patterns that sound vibration make!
