This piece is for every kid who missed out on the joys of childhood. It shows me as a small boy. Behind me is a deep, water-filled pit full of dirty water. And, sunken in the water-filled pit is a bicycle. What’s all this mean, You might ask. This piece represents every school dance or football game I missed as a kid because I had to work jobs after school. It represents all the trips to the park, or family vacations that my dad never took us to. We moved a lot, and it represents all the friendships and relationships left behind each time we moved. I ran away from home several times in my teens, and later joined the army at 17 to make one final break. I guess, this one is very personal! It represents the many years of childhood experiences I longed for, but never were to be.

Family Secrets Art Exhibit, by Steve Head collection image

This award winning Art Exhibit by Steve Head is a collection of works that tackle tough issues like: Child Abuse; Mental Illness; Suicide; Poverty; Childhood Trauma; and Generational Family Dysfunction. This exhibit has touched the hearts of people from all around the world. Using VR, (virtual reality), like Oculus, teachers from countries outside the United States are bringing their students into an online VR art gallery, to meet the artist and see the exhibit. The first such group were "at-risk" teenagers from Ukraine. The artist uses his own struggles and his own family story to express his pain and share his innermost wounds. In doing so, these artworks connect his heart - directly to the hearts of others in a visceral way. The response from young people and adults alike has been amazing. The purpose of this exhibit is to bring these topics out of the closet of shame and into the light. To openly talk about & share our hidden stories is the beginning of the healing process.
