"Humanimals I" is part of my series "Double Inverted Portraits," that I began in 2019 in San Francisco. They are all made out of multiple layers of plexiglass that have been printed and painted upon all sides and that are then sandwiched onto canvas or wood panel. In this work a few of the questions being examined are (A) how do we perceive ourselves, how do we separate our animal nature from our "human" nature, and (B) how can we see ourselves, objectively? Can we see our true selves? Question A and B are very much two different ways of stating complex paradoxical aspects of the same central sources of our shared existential animal/human mystery...
