This work addresses the necessity for a quiet contemplative space that rejuvenates and allows for introspection and personal growth. In the early difficult Covid times it became immediately apparent that loneliness would be a mental health challenge but what became more apparent over time was the need for personal space for those living in a household with multiple people. Reviewing the past year has revealed the many fragile and fractured relationships that could not survive a year in lock-down without clear boundaries and personal space.
Nubia is a fictional character, a comic book super-heroine published by DC Comics. The original Nubia was created by Robert Kanigher and Don Heck, and debuted in Wonder Woman #204. The idea for this work came one evening as the model and I were sitting around a back yard fire where she told me that when she was a girl she fantasized about being the heroine Nubia. As the evening unfolded the idea for this painting evolved. As I worked on the canvas rendering her likeness I understood that I was not just painting a fictional character but the energy of Antimony herself.
