I watched the evolution of this storm just southwest of Childress, Texas. Slowly it grew, intensifying with each passing minute. I pursued it for miles and noticed the wall cloud start rotating faster and faster. Suddenly, a small funnel descended from the wall cloud, longing for the ground until it connected in a swirl of dust! Standing in this field, in awe of the raw beauty materializing before me, I heard a loud thud, then another, and another! It was baseball sized hail falling all around me. The thought of moving to safety briefly crossed my mind but I couldn’t force myself to leave. You see, most tornados are dark, grungy, non-photogenic masses. But this one was special. You could see it and the glorious rotating updraft reaching into the heavens. After a few too many close calls with the monster hail, I reluctantly gave in and continued to track with the storm. Night closed in as the sun set on this monumental day where I witnessed the finger of God.
