The Currency

The Currency is a unique NFT project by renowned British artist Damien Hirst, launched in July 2021. The project consists of 10,000 unique hand-painted spots on A4 paper created in 2016, with each physical artwork corresponding to a digital NFT.

Each piece features distinctive elements including a hologram containing Hirst's signature, a microdot, and a randomized title generated from the artist's favorite song lyrics.

The Choice

The Currency took an innovative approach to the relationship between physical and digital art. Collectors who purchased the NFTs were given a one-year period to decide whether to keep the digital token or exchange it for the physical artwork. If they chose to keep the NFT, the corresponding physical piece would be burned; if they opted for the physical artwork, the NFT would be deleted.

This forced collectors to make a decisive choice about which medium they valued more, creating an interesting commentary on the nature of value and ownership in the digital age.

The Value of Art

When the decision period ended in July 2022, 5,149 collectors chose to keep their physical artworks, while 4,851 opted to retain their NFTs, resulting in the corresponding physical pieces being burned by Hirst in a public event at Newport Street Gallery in London.

The project sparked significant discussion about the future of art, the value of digital versus physical assets, and the role of blockchain technology in the art world. Each piece in The Currency collection was initially priced at $2,000, though their values fluctuated significantly in the secondary market during and after the project's active phase.
