Evolutionary Art

The author developed a software named SBArt in 1993 and has been continuing the migration and expantion since that time. It is a design support tool to create abstract 2D CG images based on artificial selection, which was originally proposed as Artificial Evolution by Mr. Karl Sims. It allows us to breed abstract images. An individual image is rendered by a type of math function that maps x and y coordinate plus time variable t to HSB colour. The functional expression represented in a tree structure is the genotype as a target of genetic evolution through a breeding process in the interaction between the computer and an artist. The recent popularisation of media creation by generative AI is going to change the style of artistic creation from design to selection. The approaches of evolutionary arts has already been practicing this style for more than three decades. The potential complexity of this method is exactly suitable to call it "Generative Art." You can check the technical detail in our SBArt4 web page http://www.intlab.soka.ac.jp/~unemi/sbart/4/
