ROOTED - January 2020

EDITIONS.

Wistman's Wood is an ancient woodland on Dartmoor in England, based on the slopes of the West Dart River. Covering just eight acres in area, this isolated woodland is the remnant of ancient woodland which once covered the moor thousands of years ago. The Oak trees here are very old and stunted, with their branches twisted and knotted into fantastical shapes.

Wistman's Wood has been mentioned in writing for hundreds of years. It is likely to be a leftover from the ancient forest that covered much of Dartmoor 7000 BC. The wood has been the inspiration for numerous artists, poets, photographers and appears in hundreds of nineteenth-century accounts.

Mystical has been an ongoing photographic project by Neil Burnell and documents his unique vision of Wistman's Wood over the last seven years. The ongoing series takes a look at the fairytale-like atmosphere created by the thick fog, gnarled trees, and moss-covered stones of Wistman's Wood in Dartmoor, Devon, England. This particular wood has long been the subject of folklore and myth, with many writers describing it as the most haunted location in Dartmoor.

A mossy labyrinth of gnarled roots and twisted branches. Was I in Dagobah, a film set from ‘The Empire Strikes Back’? I can’t be. This magical place was Wistman’s Wood. Little was I to know the lasting impression this would leave me with as a young lad, as I find myself re-imagining how I felt, and how I could spread this awe and wonder through my passion for photography.

This hidden gem in the Dartmoor National Park has been fabulously challenging to capture, with six years of steely resolve to achieve images I can be proud of, images that convey the Mystical feeling of Wistman’s.

Trading heavy fog, with light conditions at the crisp first hour of dawn and the softer last hour of dusk, taught me to respect mother nature. Be patient, and I would find the magic. Or was the magic finding me? I still don’t know.

‘Mystical’ is a glimpse into how an area of such beauty has defined me as a photographer, representing my strongest and most rewarding experience so far.
