North End. The basalt gleams in the intermittent sunlight. Black volcanic rock reaching upward, breaching the lichens and mosses, bracken and heather. The sheep paths interlace the signs of life, both past and present. Hentilagets caught in the stones, newspaper tatters caught on the yellow prickly gorse, pylons stretching into the distance and the remnants of stone walls. The rivers and burns are oblivious, foaming, bubbling, rushing onward to their destination, unaware that they too, carve an relentless path. There is a deep history in the bones of this land where rock face overshadows the sea. Alone in these hills, I hear them tell their stories. The majesty of Vikings, the sadness of people who once lived here and the promises of tomorrow.
