In Paraguay, a Spanish Jesuit priest named Alfonso Rodrguez Olmedo was assigned to work among the Guarani people. As a result, he is revered by Catholics as a martyr and a saint. Rodrguez was born on March 10, 1598 in Zamora, Spain. He completed his novitiate in Villagarca de Campos, Valladolid, before being sent to Paraguay for further study.
