The "Eyo" is of great cultural significance to Lagos. Back in the day, the Eyo festival was held to escort the soul of a departed Lagos King or Chief and to usher in a new king. It is widely believed that the play is one of the manifestations of the customary African revelry that serves as the forerunner of the modern carnival in Brazil. This is a photograph of a giant eyo statue at the Tafawa Balewa Square, a 14 hectare ceremonial ground in Lagos Island.

My motherland through my lens collection image

I have spent the past 2 years traveling Nigeria and documenting stories about our culture, history and landscapes. Throughout my life, African countries have been depicted in a negative manner in the media and I do this to show the world that Africa is lush, rich and diverse. I document these stories on my personal website www.foluoyefeso.com, and the photographs in this collection are favorites from the journey so far. Thank you for being here!
