While most remember the American expatriate turned French citizen for her provocative vaudeville singing and dancing, Josephine Baker was critical to the fight against the tyranny of fascism during World War II. When Paris fell to the Nazis, the head of French counter-military intelligence recruited Baker for espionage. She told him, “France made me what I am. I will be grateful forever. The people of Paris have given me everything...I am ready, captain, to give them my life. You can use me as you wish.”

Josephine provided shelter and visas to resistance fighters. When the Nazis came to question Baker, she stood strong and charmed the soldiers, protecting her charges. She gathered intel on German troops. She was so trusted that she was given state secrets to pin inside her underwear and write all over her body. She knew that because of her celebrity status she was unlikely to be strip-searched, and she was right. After the Nazi’s occupation, she sold her jewelry to raise money for food and coal for the impoverished French citizens. After the war, the legendary General de Gaulle awarded Josephine with the Croix de Guerre, Rosette de la Résistance and Chevalier de Légion d’honneur, the highest order of merit for military and civil action. Josephine Baker put her life on the line to fight for liberty and justice. She deserves to be remembered and honored for eternity, which this NFT ensures.

From Paris With Love - by Addonis collection image

Addonis’ NFT series From Paris With Love originated from being requested by the French Consulate of Miami to create a portrait in honor of Josephine Baker’s 2021 induction into the Pantheon, making her the first Black woman to receive one of the highest honors in France. In 1925, Baker moved to Europe, fleeing US discrimination. She became the most famous woman in the world for her singing and dancing, as well as the highest paid entertainer of her time. When WWII hit, Josephine fought against the Nazis as a spy for the French Resistance and was awarded the highest order of merit for military and civil action. She returned to the US for the March on Washington, where she spoke just before Dr. Martin Luther King gave his “I Have a Dream” oration. This NFT collection connects the important moments in Ms. Baker’s life: the Pantheon in Paris, French Consulate of Miami, the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, and the world via web 3.0.
