The Kuba Kingdom, is also known as the Kingdom of the Bakuba or the Kingdom of Bushongo. Kuba is a great kingdom in Central Africa. The Kingdom flourished at its highest peak between the 17th and 19th centuries in modern-day Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Kingdom is a conglomerate of several smaller Bushongo-speaking principalities as well as the Kete, Coofa, Mbeengi, and the Kasai Twa Pygmies. The original Kuba migrated during the 16th century from the north. Nineteen different ethnic groups are included in the kingdom, which still exists and is presided over by the King called (nyim). The Kuba government is organized toward a merit-based title system, but power still remained firmly in the hands of the aristocracy. The king was responsible to a court council of all the Kuba subgroups, who were represented equally before the king by their elites. The Kuba believed in Bumba the Sky Father who spewed out the sun, moon, stars, and planets. He also created life with the Earth Mother. However these were somewhat distant deities, and the Kuba placed more immediate concern in a supernatural being named Woot, who named the animals and other things. Woot was the first human and bringer of civilization. The Kuba are sometimes known as the "Children of Woot.” According to legend Bwoom was sent to Earth by his father (the great God - Woot), to establish the Kuba kingdom and rule over the inhabitants. His sister Ngaady aMwaash, and his brother Mwaash aMbooy with whom he eventually struggled for power accompanied him. Bwoom also symbolically speaks for the common man. Three types of masks are associated with the Kuba royal kingdom namely the Bwoom wooden mask, Ngaady A Mwaash and the Mwaash aMbooy. Typical characteristics of these masks are the geometrical patterns on the forehead in this instance, colorful beads and the cowry shells. Ngaady a Mwaash or pawn woman of Mwaash mask represents the daughter of the great God Woot. The first wife of the first king from which, all Kuba royalty descended. The two vertical lines below the eyes running down the cheeks represent tears of joy and pain associated with being the queen mother. Mwaash aMbooy - The moshambwooy mask represents - Woot, the first of the royal ruling Bushoong founder of the Kuba kingdom. Each Kuba king and chief owns a Moshambwooy mask and wears it during royal ceremonies and initiation rites. The masks are decorated with colorful beads, cowrie shells, and animal skins to indicate the high rank and royal status. When the ruling king dies, the mask gets buried along with the king.
Most African masks that were taken from the continent are now in the homes of private collectors and museums. The descendants of these mask makers do not have the privilege of seeing what their ancestors carved. Even though the masks were aesthetically appealing, they were functional to the tribes that used them.
African masks represent ideas that are still relevant today. I am making the most rare and most expensive masks available to new collectors in 3D. 50% of Proceeds will be contributed in setting up an Innovation Hub, in Ghana. This Innovation Hub will be a place where young creatives who are the descendants of these mask makers will come to, to develop their ideas and bring them to fruition using technology. Creatives will receive training material to develop their talents and creative abilities.
