[INTERPRETING KLAYRock : EXPERIMENT #3 RAINBOW WARRIOR]

As an artist who uses animals as a motif, I believe all aspects of nature can be a source of creation motif for an artist. The original digital sculpture Rainbow Warrior is an inter-dimensional being also created by Mother Nature herself, tasked to shine light on the beauty of the universe through both knowledge and violence. This was born out of choices that meant to create an atmosphere that evokes both curiosity and fear, while creating an image that’s familiar in nature yet foreign and unseen in our universe.

In this work, the etymology of Rainbow Warrior is interpreted one dimensionally, as the horse is the chosen subject, and instead of expressing the identity of the subject literally, I tried to emphasize the difference between the digital work and the likeness of its original work. Rather than visually reproducing the Warrior, it has transformed into a new creature through processes such as simplification, change, emphasis on subjective imagination. In an effort to break away from the fixed form, I created this with mysterious fur color combination of wool, expressed in contrast to the rough appearance of a wild magical giant horse lifting its forefoot, an image that is unique to a horse. It is my hope that sense of beauty that oozes unfamiliarity and mystery can be felt through this work as was felt from the original work.

동물을 모티브로 활동하는 작가로서 자연은, 모두의 삶의 터전이자 예술가의 창조 모티브로서 존재한다고 생각합니다. 원작품인 디지털 조각품 레인보우 워리어(Rainbow Warrior) 또한 우주의 아름다움을 비추는 임무를 맡은 대자연에 의해 탄생했습니다. 자연에서 탄생했지만 우주의 미지의 존재에 의해 형성돼 호기심과 공포를 동시에 불러일으키는 원작품의 분위기에 끌려 선택하게 되었습니다.

이번 작업은 ‘레인보우 워리어’라는 어원을 1차원적으로 풀이하여 말(馬)이라는 동물을 선택하게 되었고 대상의 정체성을 극명하게 표현하기 보다는 기존 원작의 디지털 작업과 다른 기법, 소재의 다름을 강조하여 표현하려고 노력했습니다. 워리어를 가시적으로 재현하는 것이 아니라 주관적 상상으로 단순화, 변화, 강조 등의 과정을 거쳐 새로운 생명체로 형상화하였습니다. 한 마리의 거대한 말이 앞발을 들으며 야생마 적인 거친 모습과 대비적으로 표현한 양모의 신비로운 털 색의 조합은 말이 지닌 고유의 형태로부터 벗어나도록 표현하여 고착화된 이미지를 탈피시키고자 했습니다. 원작품에서 느껴지는 생소함과 신비로움 또한 이 작품을 통해 느꼈으면 하는 바램을 가져봅니다.
