This token is created by artist David Hu (@max.the.miata) and depicts two armadillos—one large and one small riding on a horse. The characters are of David’s own design.

The idea for the piece came from the Japanese manga series “Lone Wolf and Cub”, written by Kazuo Koike and drawn by Goseki Kojima.

Two species of armadillo specifically inspired the characters: the most commonplace species, the nine-banded armadillo, and one of the most elusive species, the pink fairy armadillo.

BACKSTORY This art imagines the armadillos as characters in a graphic novel. The larger, nine-banded armadillo is a “gaucho”—a South American iconic figure that is akin to the North American cowboy. The smaller, pink fairy armadillo, meanwhile, is imagined as an orphan who was separated from its family during a natural disaster.

The gaucho, whose own land was also destroyed by a natural disaster, had been wandering across the land, making a living being a vigilante. One day, it came upon the orphan, took pity on it, and decided to help find its family.

The gaucho would have to rely on its survival instincts to make it to central Argentina (where pink fairy armadillos are most often found). Meanwhile, the art of the comic highlight the natural beauty and hidden dangers of South America’s wilderness—almost all drawn in black and white.

This token is also a MOO-Edition (@Max.the.Miata Originally Owned).
