Hypatia of Alexandria was a mathematician, philosopher and astronomer in 4th Century Egypt, which was then part of the greco-roman empire. She is credited as the first mathematician woman in history.

She was a neoplatonist, of pagan faith, and nonetheless a very open-minded persona, having disciples of the then very new Christian faith, and other confessions amongst her disciples. People came from afar to follow her teachings. Hypatia was often seen in public giving lectures.

Alexandria saw periods of turmoils and strifes where many religious factions came into conflict. Because of her faith, she met her fate in the hands of an angry Christian mob who dragged her into a former pagan temple converted into a church, stripped her and murdered her.

Her death sent ripples throughout the empire as philosophers were often seen as untouchable. She was known for her genius, brilliance, and her extraordinary dignity.
