The mosaic pavement of St. Mark's Basilica - 2099 square meters consisting of millions of marble tesserae forming geometric or animal figures - is disappearing due to the impossibility of blocking the continuous flooding caused by the increasingly frequent high tide.

The most significant element of the installation project The Rape of Venice (Andrea Morucchio, Museo Mocenigo, MUVE Contemporaneo, Venice Biennale 2015) consisted of the flooring that reproduced messed up thousands of photographic pieces of the floor of San Marco.

The photographic documentation of the entire pavement that I used - made in the years prior to the current situation in which it is estimated that at least 60% of the tiles need to be replaced - represents an exceptional historical-artistic documentation in that it preserves the visual memory of an extraordinary treasure that is already strongly compromised and for which, at present, there is no possibility of salvation.

On the basis of these considerations, in tune with the intentions that had animated The Rape of Venice project, I created a series of NFT animated videos entitled "Re-Flooring" _ NFT _ video Puzzling San Marco Floor Mosaic.

Each video consists of 24 images that make up a part of the pavement; from a situation of complete disappearance of the images that accompanied by a splashing sound that I recorded in the lagoon are gradually recomposed until they reproduce the original figure.

RE-FLOORING | nft videos | unique piece edition | the total number of Re-Flooring videos minted is 21 nfts | blockchain certified by Verisart.

Each video consists of 24 images that reassembled reproduce a part of the pavement; from a situation of disappearance of the images, accompanied rhythmically by a sound of splashing are gradually recomposed until they reproduce the original figure.

Using these same videos, I made an installation based on augmented reality >> http://www.morucchio.com/wp/en/extras/re-flooring/

I have digitally rearranged more than 9,000 tessellations. The photographic documentation of the mosaic pavement that I have used represents an exceptional testimony in that it preserves the visual memory of a treasure that is already strongly compromised.

Originally I began collecting and ordering images of the flooring of St. Mark's Church for the multimedia installation project The Rape of Venice >> http://www.morucchio.com/wp/en/exhibition/the-rape-of-venice/
