The PixelCon Story

PixelCons are collectible NFTs featuring minimalist pixel art. Started in 2018, the goal of this project is to allow artists to easily make digital collectibles within a shared ecosystem. All created PixelCons must be unique with only an 8x8 grid of pixels and 16 colors to create with. Each PixelCon is numbered in the order of their creation date. The project launched with an initial Genesis set of around 600 uniquely created works from various artists.

FAQ
What makes PixelCons special?

All PixelCon data (including its' name and collection) is fully on-chain. They are so small that their image data is encoded into 32 bytes with no hashing required! The ID of each PixelCon IS the full image data. There have never and will never be any developer fees or hidden admin restrictions. This is a passion project intended as a public good on an open permissionless blockchain and all code is open source (https://github.com/PixelCons).

How does it work?

At the core of each PixelCon is an 8x8 pixel art image created by an artist. Every PixelCon is unique, making them very collectible and one of a kind! In addition, each PixelCon can be given a name by its creator and remembers details about the current owner, the creator, the creation date, and what collection it might be a part of. Once a PixelCon is created, it can never be destroyed.

What is a PixelCon Collection?

A Collection is a set of several PixelCons that were grouped together by their creator. This allows artists to create PixelCons as part of a series and helps to create different collectible groups. A Collection must consist of at least two PixelCons, but there is no explicit limit on the maximum number of PixelCons a Collection can hold. Additionally, a PixelCon can only belong to a single Collection and all Collection data is stored on-chain. Each PixelCon that is assigned to a collection by the artist has the "Collectible" attribute. More information about a PixelCons Collection can be found by visiting its' link to the main website page.

What are Genesis PixelCons?

Genesis PixelCons are the PixelCons that were minted when the contract first launched in 2018. These consist of PixelCons made by the developers and several talented artists with existing works in the PixelCon format. There are 651 in total, but the last 326 belong to artists with unknown status (unable to contact/ keys may have been lost).

How can I create Pixelcons?

New PixelCons can be created from the website (https://pixelcons.io/create). You can only create PixelCons that do not exist already, so make sure it's unique!

How many PixelCons can be created?

There is no limit to how many PixelCons can be minted, but each one is numbered starting from 0. The only requirements are that it has to be unique and the gas has to be paid for.
