On the left side of the painting, there is a self-portrait of the artist. He is standing in front of a large canvas with a palette and a brush in his hands. The emblem that can be seen on his chest was painted later when in 1659 he was knighted and inducted into of the Order of Santiago. I imagine that while working on this painting Velázquez used to peer out to observe and capture everything later on the canvas. That is why in my sculpture his head tilts to the right and to the left, imitating the movement that the artist must have made so many times until the painting was finished.
