Rachel is the wife of the French painter Anders Osterlind, a landscape painter close to the Impressionist movement thanks to his association with Renoir. Modigliani, at the time on the French Riviera, spent several months in the Osterlind villa where he painted the only portrait on canvas of Rachel, currently kept in a private collection.
