Kachina spirits live in Native American Hopi villages. Many years ago I was priviledged to witness the Niman (Going Home) ceremony, which concludes the Kachina season with an outdoor Kachina Dance at sunrise. It was a magical experience. A few years later, I was able to trade a painting for a traditional Kachina doll made by a noted Hopi artisan. It was a Clown Kachina. Another important Kachina is the Sun Kachina, a highly abstracted version of which is reimagined in this work. The images change on the hour throughout the 24 hour night/day cycle.
