Kaieteur Falls is a centerpiece of Guyana’s natural landscape, located on the Potaro River in the Kaieteur National Park. It’s a single-drop waterfall, a geological rarity, and a potent symbol of Guyana’s pristine wilderness. The plateau from which it drops is part of the Pakaraima Mountain range,

Kaieteur Falls was made known to the world outside of Guyana in 1870 by a British geologist named Charles Barrington Brown.
Kaieteur National Park was established on April 24, 1929, making it one of the earliest ecological conservation areas in South America.

The indigenous people consider Kaieteur sacred. The Patamona name for the falls, "Kaieteur," means "old-man-fall," stemming from the legend of the chief Kai willingly sacrificing himself by paddling over the falls in a canoe to save his people by appeasing the spirit Makonaima.

A sacred place of myths of old,
Where tales of native valor told,
In the roar, spirits dance and enthrall,
At the mighty, resplendent Kaieteur
