Venus of the Machine is inspired by the Venus of Willendorf, Birth of Venus and contemporary media expression. CC0.
Venus of the Machine is an exploration of feminine identity in contemporary media culture while playing with traditional art history forms of Venus. Two historical works that I drew inspiration from were the Venus of Willendorf and the Birth of Venus. One thing I have observed in the depiction of the feminine form in a lot of historical art and popular media is an overarching thread of stoicism and serenity in facial expressions. However, when talking via text women use 2x or more emojis to express themselves. In current internet culture, women have been allowed to express themselves, assert their identities and thoughts and accumulate assets in an unprecedented way in human history. While we do have more work to do for full autonomy and equity for women, Venus of the Machine is a celebration of how far we have come and how the internet and crypto art specifically have helped empower women to find their voices and identities. I offer this piece as a gift to my friends and crypto art community at large as a thank you for helping empower me as a women, survivor and creator.
